Vietnamese Lotus Tea, known in Vietnamese as Trà Sen, is more than just a beverage; it is a cherished national treasure and a sublime art form. It represents the pinnacle of Vietnamese tea culture, where the fresh, earthy character of premium green tea leaves is masterfully infused with the exquisite, natural fragrance of the lotus flower.
The Artisanal Process: A Labor of Love
The creation of authentic Lotus Tea is a time-honored and painstaking process, often done entirely by hand. The most traditional method, known as ướp trà (curing or scenting), is what sets it apart:
-
Harvesting the Essence: Under the cover of night, when their scent is most potent, pristine lotus blossoms are collected from the lakes. The petals are carefully peeled back to access the yellow, pollen-rich stamens at the flower's center.
-
The Scenting Ritual: High-quality dry green tea leaves (often from the renowned Thai Nguyen province) are layered alternately with the fresh lotus stamens in a sealed container. For the finest batches, this process is repeated multiple times over several days, allowing the tea leaves to slowly and completely absorb the sweet, perfumed aroma of the lotus
